Group project

Before being assigned into a group I took some photos around the art school. Focusing on the ideas of "sense of place", mainly focusing on an abstract/inner/physic space. Something that would be suitable, but also conjured up emotions.

I found the elevator interesting because it was a place of movement, also, when you're inside it's somewhat mysterious to where you are exactly - you could be being transported somewhere unfamiliar. It's also very enclosed, not sure why, but it makes me think of the mind.. Opening and shutting.. Full of people (conscious thoughts) and almost empty at other times.

Before meeting up with my group, I discovered some interesting nooks inside the art school. I liked the idea of going inward, further until I ended up a place that I didn't know existed previously. It was also dark at the time, this gave it an almost haunting atmosphere.. but it was also peaceful.

Within this hallway there was what looked to be abandoned year 3 studios. One in particular caught my eye, and I ended up showing it to my group because we were talking about old tattered spaces with unsettling memories, and contrasting this with something light. We looked inside and decided it wasn't quite right, too many angles basically and would be hard to control the light.

After this, we decided to focus on a different idea, we knew we wanted to focus on the mind, inner space.. like a 6th dimension space.. Space you cant physically see. This brought to mind the idea of a smoke machine and projecting images onto the smoke. We still need to test this - I like the idea because it fully engulfs the viewer into the space.

We came up with themes we think relate to this idea for images we're going to project. Our first concept was the after-burn you get when staring at a bright light and close your eyes. One of my concepts was seeing something at the corner of your eye, or feeling some presence in a space with you. A presence perhaps not viewable in our own dimension, but on another plane. Our other concept was actually visualizing the journey inward, we thought this might be achievable through maybe capturing a journey through a building or road.. Another idea was capturing a windows 95/98 screen-saver that whizzes past the stars.. - Kind of like star wars I guess.

Pretty sure it will look kind of like this - I'm not the one recording it. Have to wait and see.

This was the best space we found for the kind of thing we want to achieve. Needs a bit of clean up!
