Bill Hart, James Barker and others

James Barker

I've been going to a few exhibitions lately of artists who use electronic media as their medium. One called
Scarred by the Darkness featuring work from James Barker. I visited this exhibition a few weeks ago and I asked him if I could take some photos of the work. it was a very peculiar exhibition, there were no titles of the work, you just sort of were taken into a dark space and were threw around a little. Well, during my experience I came across this work which was probably my favourite.

You approached a with a screen situated down a long tunnel of mirrors. I couldn't resist the temptation of putting my whole head in their and looking around.

It was like another world in there. The mirrors made and endless array of the light flashing on the monitor. it was quite memorizing, I found myself going back to it multiple times. Though watching it was kind of eerie, here's this space created, just by reflections, and yet it felt as though I could place myself right into it. But it was dark and as the name of the exhibition suggests "scarred by darkness" quite a mysterious void of space that left me feeling almost empty. To me I think the work was about an endless journey, and what's at the end of it.. This work was almost just a question mark to the beyond. While many artworks pose these questions, I don't think I've been quite so taken by a media work asking it such as this for quite a while.

Here's some more works from the exhibition:

This work was haunting, pity I couldn't capture a very good photo, it was a bit dark. Anyway you peered your head through a small slit to view this mask, with what looked like entrails at the bottom of it. I was looking at this piece for quite a while too, I'm not sure I couldn't really decipher meaning from it, but the face, as faces do.. Seemed as if it was real, could have sworn I saw it move.

Another face, this one was connected to a whole range of things.. This one seemed less refined, the wax/plastic head had a light inside of it that behaved somewhat like a heartbeat. It was kind of interesting, but I didn't take much else from it than that. The exhibition as a whole was great though, Barker really transformed that space into a sleepless dream.

Bill Hart

Also went to see Bill Hart's exhibition The Guise of Thought at cast the other week.

Bill's work certainly just keeps getting better. I really love this collection of words that are seemingly floating in the an unconscious space. I watched it for a long time and let my own thoughts drift for a while. It made me think about how many thoughts I have that are just lost or forgotten, really makes me glad I've started blogging again in this journal, as well as my private one. I have so many ideas but often I'll just them linger until they become nothing. Sometimes you just have to grab an idea and expand it, write it down, spell it out. I found this work to be very in tune with how I've been treating my ideas for Emedia this semester. Often in the past my initial idea will grow into so many others, in my mind it's almost like a tree. But sometimes it's hard to try and remember those first sprouting roots. This time I'm trying not to get too carried away with meanings etc. I have my idea and I'm sticking to it, I'm certainly glad I'm so fond of my idea.
